Quite surprisingly enough, I find myself recommending plastic grass (and the grass guy)! Well, it's a story
My clients had a pristine piece of native oak forest for a backyard in the middle of town. They identified two goals for the landscape design: protect the oaks and the natural look of the yard and make it very playable for three young children who were currently unable to use the sloping space covered in little stickery leaves and weeds. Because everything was within the root zone of the oaks, lawn was definitely out. We considered many options but still found ourselves hankering for a grass play space. We discover "Dream Greens" at a local soccer field and were shocked to find we all agreed we liked it!
The day the "Dream Greens" installation was complete, the yard filled up with kids, my clients' kids, the neighbor kids. Now they are there every chance they get. They kick soccer balls, play catch and tag, roll around on it and sit visiting and laughing. They like it. We like it. It's tough, soft and looks just like it did the day it went down. With no added water on the oaks. And no mowing. We do blow and rake the leaves. Easy.
I admit, it did take a bit of getting used to the instant pool of green on the forest floor, but as the rest of the landscape catches up, we're adjusting!
Kevin Steffee of Dream Greens, 'the grass guy', was the installer and representative of "Dream Greens". We found him very nice and straightforward to work with. He coordinated with our landscape installer and did the work himself in a clean and timely way without confusion or hassles.
When there were little glitches or changes on our part, Kevin was flexible and helpful in keeping things running smoothly. The project went quickly and Kevin made sure to cover my special areas of concern as the designer. I had created a "rumple" in the ground for the kids to roll down and Kevin was careful to secure the turf especially well there, concealing the seams and adding extra pins. It's holding really well and has become a favorite place for the kids to hang out. (Real grass would have become compacted, soggy and/or worn in that area.)
We recommend working with Kevin Steffee, he was just great! And we like the "grass"!
Sincerely,
